UPEI Medical Faculty is an opportunity for all Islanders: Byrne

For Immediate Release
Charlottetown December 11, 2019… “President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz is providing a great service for Islanders in doing background work for a medical faculty at UPEI. It is now time for Premier Dennis King to endorse this essential project”, says Joe Byrne, Leader of the Island New Democrats.
“With 15,000 Islanders currently in need of a family doctor, this is an urgent need that can be addressed by Premier King and his government”, says Byrne.
“The medical faculty at UPEI will not only secure our Island’s medical service for the future but will serve as an anchor for health sciences education”, affirms the Island New Democrat Leader.
Joe Byrne states that in the meantime the King government must address the physician shortage crisis by:
• Enhancing physician recruitment and retention.
• Increasing medical residency positions beyond the two already announced.
• Building capacity in our health care team to cope with Island health care needs.
Leader Joe Bryne relates with optimism, “it is encouraging to see Islanders of all walks of life supporting the medical faculty, and I am enthusiastic about the work at UPEI. The idea of a medical faculty at UPEI has seen recent support federally from New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh, as well as Island MPs Robert Morrissey and Sean Casey.”
Byrne finishes by stating, “This is an opportunity that can benefit Prince Edward Island for decades to come. As the founding voice in this initiative, the NDP PEI would like to extend a collaborative hand in helping this become reality.”
