REALITY CHECK: For King, “innovation” means privatization

CHARLOTTETOWN — Wednesday, Conservative leader Dennis King told Islanders that he plans to address health care issues through “innovation.” This is a weak attempt to cover his true plans for privatization.
King’s vision for health care includes increased reliance on the private virtual company Maple, owned by Canadian Billionaire Gallen Weston, a fact he’s making little effort to hide. Meanwhile, over 27,000 people on PEI are waiting for a family doctor or nurse practitioner.
Last fall, the four Conservative Atlantic Premiers joined Ontario Premier Doug Ford in revealing their intentions to privatize health care. Dennis King suggested a system of privately operated, publicly funded health services.
“The Conservative leader thinks he can fool Islanders with talk of health care ‘innovation,’ but Islanders know better,” says New Democrat Candidate for District 9 Tristan Mitchell. “Our healthcare system is in crisis, the last thing we need to do is give more money to Gallen Weston and his shareholders. and the only way out is through public investment in public services. A better deal for health care is long overdue.”
Among the Island New Democrat’s health care solutions are the creation of community health hubs, fast-tracking certification of foreign-trained health professionals, and hiring physician assistants to ease the pressure on regional hospitals.
