New Democrats Will Fight for Students by Freezing and Lowering University Tuition

CHARLOTTETOWN — In light of a proposed tuition hike at the University of Prince Edward Island, New Democrats are offering a plan to make education more affordable.
“Investing in young people is critical to the future of our province. In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, this is imposing more hardship on students and their families,” said NDP leader Michelle Neill. “The cost of education has been skyrocketing for two decades. If we want students to succeed, we have to freeze and eventually lower tuition fees.”
On March 7, UPEI announced plans for an increase of 4% for general tuition and 6% for veterinary students. Since the early 2000s, Canadian university tuition fees have increased at 5 times the rate of inflation.
New Democrats are committed to an immediate investment of $500,000 to freeze university tuition at current levels.
The NDP released its full platform last week that committed to freezing and eventually reducing university tuition for Islanders. The plan will also make Holland college free for Islanders, invest in student housing and raise minimum wage to $17/hr with a plan to get to a livable wage and a basic income guarantee.
The total costs for the NDP Better Deal for students is approximately $15.5 million.
