Hilda Ramsay Student Award

The NDP PEI Women’s Committee is proud to announce the newly formed Hilda Ramsay award – $500 will be granted to a female identified student who is pursuing study at UPEI or Holland College.

“We recognize the debt load that students carry and wanted to help in some way,” says Susan MacVittie, Chair, NDP PEI Women’s Committee.
“We know that women struggle more to pay back student loans due to the gender wage gap. That gap also widens for racialized, immigrant and indigenous women and women with disabilities.”

In 1951 Hilda Ramsay, of Indian River, PEI, became the first women to run for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of PEI. She represented the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation(CCF), later renamed the New Democratic Party (NDP). As a community minded person, Hilda Ramsay served as provincial president of the Women’s Institute, the Catholic Women’s League, the Island Drama Festival, and was a recognized actress and winner of a Canadian Drama Award.

The deadline for the Hilda Ramsay Award is November 1. The award application can found online at UPEI, Holland College or the NDP PEI websites.

Preference will be given to a student in financial need with a demonstrated interest in social justice, women/diversity studies, Indigenous, environmental studies, political studies or trades.

The recipient of the award will be invited as a guest to the NDP PEI dinner, November 15 at the Rodd Charlottetown featuring economist Alison Coffin, Leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party.
