Herb Dickieson District 25 - O'Leary-Inverness

Dr. Herb Dickieson, former MLA and Leader of the Island New Democrats represented West Point-Bloomfield (1996-2000). In the Legislature Dr. Herb fought to maintain rural hospitals, including Community Hospital, O’Leary, led the successful fight for universal kindergarten on Prince Edward Island, and among many other issues, he achieved a call back system to protect seasonal workers’ jobs from political interference.

Dr. Dickieson has been a physician for 30 years with a family practice based in West Prince. He was Chief of Staff at Community Hospital, President of the West Prince Medical Staff and served as President of the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island.

Herb Dickieson was raised on a family farm. He graduated from the UPEI with a B.Sc. in 1979 and received a B.Ed. in 1982. After teaching high school in Calgary for a year, he returned to Dalhousie University, Halifax receiving an MD in 1987. He set up practice in O’Leary, serving West Prince with ER duty, office practice and home calls.

As a physician, Member of the Legislature and Islander Dr. Dickieson has been always involved in local and provincial issues from saving rural post offices to supporting agriculture and improving the quality of education. He has served on boards acquiring a youth centre and a family violence coordinator, and is a member of the West Prince Chamber of Commerce and Royal Canadian Legion.

Dr. Herb Dickieson resides with his wife Kathleen in Howlan and enjoys the support of his adult children Alexandra, Morgan and Daniel.
