Joe Byrne District 12 - Charlottetown-Victoria Park
Joe was born and raised in Sept-Îles, Quebec and moved to Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia where he finished high school. He spent all his summers on PEI and moved to the Island in 1983 to finish university. He graduated from UPEI in 1986 and spent 1987-93 living and working in Dominican Republic.
Joe has been involved in many different spaces in our community including; Cooper Institute, Latin American Mission Program, PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, Peace Vigil group, Voluntary Resource Centre and Family Reunification PEI. In the last few years has a worked as a driving instructor for Abegweit Driving School, as Community Connections supervisor with PEI ANC and as Director of Pastoral Planning and Youth Ministry. Since 2011 he has also volunteered his time and talent as a singer and story-teller, entertaining seniors in nursing homes in the Charlottetown area.
He has been involved as an New Democrat on PEI for more than twenty years serving in various capacities on campaigns and district/riding association. He was the federal NDP candidate in both 2011 and 2015.
Joe was elected leader of the NDP PEI in April 2018 and nominated as the candidate for District 12 Charlottetown-Victoria Park in August.
Joe efforts in working with newcomers, and refugees in particular, were recognized when he was awarded the Citation for Citizenship in 2003.
