Affordable Housing Crisis Solutions

Previous Island Governments have not invested enough in building, acquiring, owning and managing housing across the market. This has left housing to the private sector to operate without sufficient checks and balances.
There has not been an adequate review of the Rental of Residential Properties Act to balance the rights of owners and tenants. This leaves tenants too vulnerable.
The NDP wants the government to invest in building, owning and managing housing across all needs from single unattached individuals to couples and families. This would also address physical and financial accessibility.
The NDP believes that we need to strengthen tenants’ rights. This should be the core reference when the Act comes up for review.
The NDP wants to see the short-term rental market regulated to give more protection to long-term tenants; and the creation of a housing bank that can keep properties in the long-term rental market permanently.
