Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, is challenging Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz to tell Islanders where he stands on the question of Mike Duffy’s residential status.

“Recently, a local media reporter asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper why he had appointed Mike Duffy as a senator from P.E.I. when everyone on the Island knew that Duffy was not a resident of the province,” Redmond explained. “Harper replied that it was because Duffy owned a residence in P.E.I.

“I think Island voters have a right to know if Lantz holds that same view.

“Does Lantz believe that owning a residence in the province is all that’s required to represent us in the Senate?” Redmond asked. “If he doesn’t support that interpretation, the PC leader needs to be open and honest with voters and tell them where he stands.

“He knows as well as I do that most Islanders – and most members of the PC Party – don’t believe that Duffy meets the basic requirements to represent P.E.I. in the Senate. Leadership requires that Lantz indicate whether he stands with Stephen Harper or with the people of P.E.I. He can’t do both!

“And his silence will only be seen as acceptance of the situation,” Redmond concluded.
