PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT & OUR KIDS – BAN COSMETIC PESTICIDES

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – An NDP government would protect PEI’s environment by placing a ban on the use of all cosmetic pesticides.

“The toxins in cosmetic pesticides are unnecessary and they make our kids sick,” said NDP Leader Mike Redmond. “New Democrats will protect our environment and ban the use of cosmetic pesticides.”

Half a decade ago, Ontario and Quebec completely banned the cosmetic use of synthetic lawn pesticides. The decision in response to documented health and environmental concerns. Over 250 products are banned for sale and more than 95 pesticide ingredients are banned for cosmetic uses.

In PEI, despite repeated promises for a full ban on cosmetic pesticides, the Liberal government banned only one product. Under more public pressure, the Liberals decided to pass the issue off to municipalities through legislation that has proven to be ineffective.

“There will be zero progress on reducing the use of these toxins in our neighbourhoods if Liberals and Conservatives dominate the Legislature,” said Redmond. “Islanders who want to see an end to the use of cosmetic pesticides can vote for NDP and actually get the results they want.”
