PEI WOMEN DESERVE ACCESS TO FULL RANGE OF REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – NDP Leader Mike Redmond announced today that an NDP government will establish a Women’s Health Centre. The Centre will include local access to abortion and a full range of reproductive health services for women.
“Women in PEI, like women across Canada, deserve access to a full range of reproductive health services,” said Redmond. “The current government policy on women’s health makes no sense. I will end it.”
Last year, Liberal health minister Doug Currie shut down a proposal by Health PEI to provide abortion services to women on the Island. The proposal would have saved thousands of taxpayer dollars while providing PEI women with the same services women can access across Canada.
Women from the Island spend up to $46,000 per year to access reproductive health services outside the province.
“What kind of government refuses to help local women and save taxpayers’ money at the same time?” asked Redmond. “Islanders deserve better than Liberal and Conservative parties that put their own political agenda ahead of women’s health and choice.”
The Women’s Health Centre will address health issues of women of all ages. Last month the NDP committed to a Health Accord focused on the health and wellness of every Islander.
