(Charlottetown- November 6, 2012)
Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, has congratulated the Ghiz Government on the release of the PNP list and has also encouraged release of the PNP evaluation as per the recommendation of the 2012 Report of the Auditor General.
“I congratulate the Provincial Government on releasing the PNP list” said Redmond. The Government of Prince Edward Island was responding to the ruling of Justice Wayne Cheverie on the CBC led court case to access the list of recipients under the PEI Provincial Nominee Program – Immigrant Partner Category.
“However, it is time for Islanders to see some real data on the impact of PNP on the Island economy,” stated the NDP leader, “and the best way to do that is to respond to the Auditor General’s request for a program evaluation from his 2009 report.”
In the 2012 Report, Auditor General Colin Younker reviewed outstanding recommendations on PNP from 2009. The Report discussed that Island Investment Development Inc. (IIDI) commissioned a review of the provincial nominee program and that the Auditor General expected it soon after February 2012.
“It is way past time for the government to produce its evaluation or review, and if it is not being produced at this time then the terms of reference for this review or evaluation should be set during the upcoming sitting of the Legislature and the report produced as rapidly as possible,” said Redmond.
“A good PNP evaluation would lead to improved management of this and all other economic development programs by assessing impacts of investments on business expansion, capital purchases, process innovations and jobs created. If we run our programs transparently then we can reassure Islanders that we are committed to doing the best job possible for all Islanders,” concluded the NDP Leader.
