FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE – (June 22, 2015) – Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of PEI is calling on PEI Premier Wade MacLauchlan to take immediate action on recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to mark National Aboriginal Day.

In its report, the TRC writes about the deep scars left by colonialism and “policies of cultural genocide and assimilation” and the damage inflicted on the relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples.

Redmond would like the Premier of Prince Edward Island, Wade MacLauchlan to commit to several key recommendations including “A Monument to our Mistake”, to be built in the capital city, and “A new Curriculum”, to include the history of aboriginal people and the residential school system as part of the K-12 curriculum.

“Residential schools were more than an educational program, it was an integral part of a conscious policy of cultural genocide,” stated Redmond. “We must have a government that recognizes, takes responsibility and looks to heal deep wounds within our first nation’s communities.”
