NDP Demands Accountability and Leadership on Education

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE? – Charlottetown, PE – (September 1, 2015)  NDP Leader wants answers from the Liberal government and  a complete 180 degree turn  around on how education is run in the province. “ Back on June 22nd, I asked the Minister of  Education two very simple questions?   1. Can he show what determines class composition and teachertostudent ratios? (Are principals, custodians, and guidance counselors factored into his teacherto student ratio)? 2. Can the Minister please explain the formula used to determine the classroom needs of  students (including those with behavioral issues, learning disabilities, and English as a  second language)? “The Minister has ignored this simple request, and government has flipflopped on teacher cuts”? explained Redmond. The first 100 days has not been a very strong indication of the  Premiers Leadership skills”, stated Redmond.     The NDP also recognizes that the teachers on PEI are returning to the classroom without a  contract, as of AUG. 31, 2015. In addition to the lack of respect with contract negotiations, the  province has since cut 7 positions in the board office. “How do these cuts affect curriculum  development”?, asked Redmond. Redmond believes the province should not be looking at education as a line item on a budget  sheet but rather than an investment into our future as a province. The NDP would like the  province to look at these very important areas: -Exposing our children to music, art, dance, sport and recreation   -A minimum of one hour of daily physical activity for every PEI student. -Ending the practice of teachers’ spending out of pocket for everyday classroom needs  A strong emphasis on reading, writing and math -A return to the Provincial Vocational Institute  (PVI), allowing more opportunity for young  people to learn trades, carpentry, electronics, plumbing and non traditional trades   Addressing the unacceptable rates of child hunger on PEI, a universal breakfast & lunch  program across PEI.  “As we enter a new school year, we need a new approach, one that respects our teachers,  offers supports in the classroom, sees the Island as a giant classroom, and is child focused”,  stated Redmond The NDP will continue to push government to address these fundamental  areas immediately,  with the knowledge the greatest investment we can make is in our children.
